The Garamba National park
The park
The Garamba National Park (GNP - 5,133 km2) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS) located in the north-eastern DRC. Created in 1938, the protected area shares a border with the Republic of South Sudan on the Nile – Congo Rivers Watershed. It is home to many totally protected species including African Elephants, Kordoffan Girafe, Lions, Leopards... After a maximum of 22,670 elephants (95% CI: 10,880 – 34,460) was estimated from an aerial sample count in 1976, (African Parks & ICCN, 2019), the recent estimates show approx. 1264 (95% CI 1164 – 1308) in 2021 (African Parks & ICCN, 2021). This decline is due mainly to poaching and illegal wildlife trafficking.
Garamba has developped a network of IoT to enhance law enforcement and biodiversity awareness. This provides intelligence to the Analysts who provide support to the Park Managers in decision making.
